Governor's Proposed 2008-09 Budget Cuts: Impact on Child Care and Development Services for Los Angeles County Children and Families
On January 11, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger released his proposed 2008-09 State Budget, which proposes implementing 10% across-the-board cuts to most General Fund departments. The proposed budget is the Governor’s attempt to address the projected budget deficit of $14.5 billion. The proposed budget would cut child care and development funding by $198.8 million resulting in the loss of services to approximately 18,000 children of low-income families across the State. The Governor’s budget proposal would greatly impact the availability of child care and development services available throughout Los Angeles County. With the data currently available, the potential financial loss to CDE/CDD-contracted child care and development programs is estimated conservatively at $51,421,913. Moreover, the loss of spaces to serve children from low-income families is estimated at over 3000
This policy brief summarizes the potential impact of the Governor’s proposed cuts to child care and development services in Los Angeles County.
