Managing the Cost of Child Care and Development

Every parent wants a quality child care and development setting where their children are engaged in relationships and activities that foster healthy physical, social, and intellectual development. Enough staff, who are well-educated in the field of early care and education, are the foundation of quality child care and development programs.

Because child care is so labor intensive, it is expensive to purchase. For families with young children, child care frequently ranks among the top five family expenses. The programs listed on the previous page are designed to assist low- to moderate income families with their child care costs and connecting them to government subsidized child care programs. Each of these programs has their own rules and regulations.  Take your time to review your options and see if one works for you.

Government subsidized child care programs generally require that families with the lowest income be enrolled first. As a result, being eligible for services does not necessarily mean that you will in fact receive services. Remember, you can also contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (R&R) agency for information on subsidized child care services near home and/or work. To learn if you are eligible for subsidized child care services, be prepared to tell the R&R Counselor your family size and gross family income.
